The second of golf’s major tournaments of 2011, the U.S. Open, tees off this morning at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland.  Unfortunately Tiger Woods will not be taking part due to an injured left leg which threatens to rule him out for the rest of the year.

The recent dip in Wood’s form has meant opened the door in the last 10 majors being won by 10 different champions.  All eyes will be on Rory McIlroy after his collapse at the Master with nine holes to play,  while many favour Steve Stricker and David Toms following their recent PGA Tour wins.

Live coverage is expected to begin on Thursday at 10AM EST.  In the US the golf tournament will be broadcast on ESPN and NBC.  In the United Kingdom and Ireland you can follow all the action on Sky Sports.

You can also watch a live stream on the US Open Championship 2011 on your iPhone and iPad for free.  These webcasts will be particularly useful for golf enthusiast who want to catch some of the action while at work or travelling.

We all know there are plenty of iPhone apps out there like WatchESPN and Sky Mobile TV that let you watch football, baseball, cricket and any other sports live providing you are willing to pay 100's of £ $ or € on a yearly subscription.  But can we watch sports live on our iPhones for free?  The answer is YES WE CAN.

So how do I watch my favourite team play live on my iPhone?  The biggest obstacle to watcing live sports on the iPhone is its lack of Flash support, so the first thing you need to do is download the Skyfire browser app from the App Store.  The beauty of the Skyfire app is that it allows you to view Flash videos on your iPhone.  It currently costs $2.99 / £1.79 / €2.39 but is well worth the investment.  http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/skyfire-web-browser/id384941497

OK, once you’ve installed the Skyfire browser on your iPhone, here’s what you do.

  1. Launch the Skyfire browser app (It's basically just a browser like Safari, IE, Firefox, Chrome or any other)

  2. Using the Skyfire browser, visit any of the websites that offer free live streams of sporting events.  For example, try http://www.fromsportcom.com/

  3. Now from the list of available sports streams, select the one you want to watch.  If the page contains a flash video you will notice that the Skyfire browser opens a smaller window on the bottom of your screen with a play button.  Select the play button.

  4. The Skyfire browser will now attempt to convert the Flash video into a format that the iPhone can play (it converst to HTML5 for any geeks who are curious).  You may get the following message “Optimizing the video for your device and connection speed” while the video converts and buffers for your device.

  5. After about 10 - 20 seconds the video should begin playing.  Now just sit back and watch your favourite team play for FREE (hopefully!)

For those of you who are maybe a little confused about what Skyfire is or how to use it, I've included a YouTube video demonstration below that may explain thing a little better.  I've also included a list of other free sports stream websites at the bottom of the page.

Yesterday we looked at the TVUPlayer app that broadcasts many international Free to Air television stations to the iPhone.  Today we’ll be looking at a new iPhone app called Justin.tv that allows users broadcast live streaming video from their iPhones.  Once a user sets up an account with Justin.tv they can begin broadcasting a live stream from their television, webcam or iPhone camera to an unlimited number of people.

If you visit the Justin.tv website (www.justin.tv) you can browse any of the 200,000+ live streams that members of the Justin.tv community are currently broadcasting for free.  You will probably notice pretty quickly that most people choose to live stream movies or sporting events rather than anything personal like birthday parties or weddings.

As a result, you will find a live stream of most sporting events, including games from the MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, Barclays Premier League, Serie A and La Liga, as well as boxing, tennis, Formula 1, golf and just about any other sport you can think of.

It’s free to watch any of the channels on the Justin.tv website and you don’t even need to register.  Just visit the website and search for the sporting fixture you are looking for.

If you’d like to be able to watch you favourite team on your phone you can also do so thanks to a new Justin.tv iPhone app that can be downloaded from the iTunes App store.  The new iPhone app allows users watch any of the live streams from Justin.tv, search for their favourite sports and chat with other users viewing the same event.  If you want, you can even begin broadcasting live via your iPhones camera.

Note:  We’ve noticed for some football, soccer, baseball or basketball games the Justin.tv server can get overloaded and it can difficult to establish a connection via the iPhone app.

The Justin.tv app costs $4.99 / €3.99 / £2.99 - http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/justin-tv/id358612216
